The Governors Ball Music Festival just wrapped up after multiple days of bringing people together on Randall’s Island to enjoy a wide range of musical artists. The festival features an amalgamation of cultures, music styles, and entertainment, marking the start of the summer for over 150,000 people in attendance. Each year the three-day festival boasts a diverse lineup, consisting of every music genre that comes to mind.
Randall’s Island provides a fun escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, even while the skyscrapers remain visible and are a constant reminder of the festival’s extraordinary location.
A Talented Setup
This year, Tyler the Creator kicked off the first night with his eccentric and dynamic style. He performed songs from his recent album “IGOR”, which is currently topping charts worldwide, while also digging back into his roots with songs from his debut album “Goblin” - featuring dark tracks such as Yonkers, a stark contrast to his current upbeat style.
Florence and the Machine took the headliner spot on night two, and the intensely powerful rock/pop vocals were reverberating throughout all of Randall’s Island. The festival brings powerhouse talent for the fans to enjoy, as pop culture icons like Lil Wayne, Playboi Carti, and BROCKHAMPTON all made appearances, bringing their own unique styles to light. Electronic music was also well represented with talented DJs like Kaytranada, Zhu, Major Lazer showcasing their talents on stage.
But Governors Ball is also a platform for newer, lesser known artists - and can offer a launchpad for their rises to stardom. It's a great opportunity for the audience as well, to discover artists that they may not previously have been aware of.
Kacey Musgraves came with her adored country music, winning over the attention of country fans and many more. With an attendance of 150K, each stage - from early morning to deep at night - maintained large crowds that created an air of excitement.
Not Just Music
There is more to the festival than just listening to music with friends, as Governors Ball also offers a wide variety of food and drink. Any craving - from classic New York pizza to flavorful fruit smoothies- are there to keep the audience nourished and content.
There are also a handful of games to be played with friends on the island during this festival, such as big Jenga - where you might want to clear out of the way if the blocks come towering down, as they're each almost a foot long.
Despite the unfortunate cancellation of day 3 with the rainout that occurred, the first two days inspired nothing but joy for those who got the opportunity to see the talented musicians. Governors Ball kicks off the summer in the best way possible: a multi-day party featuring many of the most influential and gifted artists of our generation.
